Smart Move Powered by RentPrep: How do I screen a tenant?

Smart Move Powered by RentPrep is the most popular screening report offered by TenantCloud. SmartMove is an automated service that requires the applicant's involvement. SmartMove allows you to have the applicant pay directly for the screening report. It also gives you a specific credit score where our credit check is based on a pass/fail metric. If your applicant passes you will be told they met your criteria.If they fail you will be given a list of reasons why they failed the credit check. 

If you have decided to order a credit check, go to the "Applications" page in the left side menu of your dashboard and press "Run screening report" button on the needed application that will bring you to view the list of offered packages. Press the "Select" button on this report and click on the "Purchase" button:

Fill in all the necessary information and complete all the steps on this form. You can pay for the report or ask your applicant to do it. If you decided to pay for the report, a temporary hold will be placed on your card for $35.00. You’ll only be charged for successfully completed applications.


Once you place a SmartMove order request you’ll be prompted to enter your applicant’s email address. The applicant will then be taken through a three step process.

  1. They’ll enter their personal information.
  2. They’ll answer IDMA Verification questions.
  3. They’ll submit payment for the report (if you selected this option).

The SmartMove product will send an initial email at the time of ordering, and then again in 24 hours if there is still no response. Since pending payments only hold for 3 days, there are no additional emails that go out beyond those two.

RentPrep provides some instruction in their email that mentions if there is no response from the applicant within 3 days the landlord should follow up with the applicant to ensure they are still interest in applying for the property:
